Harry Smith's Heaven and Earth Magic a.k.a. The Magic Feature a.k.a. Heaven and Earth Magic Feature

(1943-58 or 1950-60 or 1950-61 or 1957-62 or 1959-61) (reedited several times between 1957–62) 16 mm, black & white, mono, initially 6 hours, later versions of 2 hours and 67 min. Extended version of No. 8. Collage animation culled from 19th century catalogs meant to be shown using custom-made projectors fit out with color filters (gels, wheels, etc.) and masking hand-painted glass slides to alter the projected image. Smith explains, "The first part depicts the heroine's toothache consequent to the loss of a very valuable watermelon, her dentistry and transportation to heaven. Next follows an elaborate exposition of the heavenly land, in terms of Israel and Montreal. The second part depicts the return to Earth from being eaten by Max Müller on the day Edward VII dedicated the Great Sewer of London."

Sioux was really excited when we got there but oncewe were on Main Street, two security men came up to her and told her she had to leave. They said that she looked like an attraction and it would confuse the people in the park. Siouxsie was telling the men that she just wanted to see everything and go on the rides. They finally agreed that Sioux could stay if she covered up with Randy's raincoat. We were followed all day by several security people with walkie talkies.

"My intentions in the ‘70s were not to address feminist issues on the objectification/de-objectification of the female form or the sexual exploitation of women but to explore my own sexuality and the sex industry as part of my existing art work. As a consequence of my sex magazine and film actions and stripping I discovered first hand a great deal about the very issues feminism sought to address but it was the personal experience I wanted – how men and women interact in a sexually charged/volatile manipulated situation.

With the increase in female-run pornography businesses and Internet sites, it’s difficult to say what degree of potency (and in what sense) my projects would impact today. There is a tendency towards a view that women have more sexual freedom today than we did 30 years ago and in some regards this is true, but at the same time I’m not sure that many women actually relate to or recognize this freedom and whether what they do with it is “progress” or liberating.

De-objectifying is such a complex issue. It’s like being forced into a damage limitation exercise and a hard compromise between being non-prescriptive selves at the same time as not pampering to or fueling objectification – dressing how we want to, understanding why we want to dress that way and how we put out sexual signals. Making infused alcohol is incredibly easy, I have done it myself a number of times and all it really consists of is throwing fruit and spices and hard alcohol in a jar for a week and then all the sudden you have apple cinnamon whiskey.

But here is something even more!

Infused Absynthe

1 oz dried chopped wormwood
1 tbsp angelica root
1 tsp hyssop
1 1/2 tsp coriander seeds
1/4 teaspoon caraway seeds
1/2 tsp crushed cardamon
1/4 tsp fennel or anise seeds
2 cups of white sugar (optional)
1 litre of Vodka (40 + proof)

Add the wormwood to the bottle of vodka and let it infuse for 5-14 days , depending on the strength and bitterness you want, shaking at least once every day, then strain out the wormwood. Add the rest of the herbs to the bottle and pour in the strained wormwood-vodka. Allow to infuse for another 5 days, again shaking the bottle every day, then strain and drink or add the absynthe to a pot with 2 cups of sugar and heat until boiling and all the sugar is dissolved, then cool and pour back into the bottle for drinking.

And in the tradition of 18th century absynthe it should contain fennel. And I would say that adding sugar to it is actually pretty essential not optional, but that can be done for each glass individually with sugar cubes (traditional) or all at once like the recipe says.

Solanacea. The nightshade family. Here we will be looking at some of the ones that containing tropane alkaloids. Not all of the nightshade family is so kvlt, it also includes tomatoes, potatoes, wolfberries (goji berries), eggplants, petunias and so on.

Datura Stramonium

Also known as devil's weed, angel's trumpet, thorn apple, jimson weed, Jamestown weed, stinkweed, moonflower, mad seed.
Mnemonic admonition for intoxication of this plant: "Blind as a bat, mad as a hatter, red as a beet, hot as hell, dry as bone, the bowel and bladder lose their tone, and the heart runs alone." The effects of Datura are somewhat like a dream; consciousness falls in and out and these effects typically last for days. A good nod of thanks to tropane alkaloids, which are one of the few things that cause actual true hallucinations which cannot be distinguished from 'reality'. This is much different from things such as psilocybin or LSD in which your hallucinations are based on sensory distorations.
Datura is native to either Central America or India. Often used in scared ceremonies, such as with manhood. Hindi sadhu's are known to smoke it in combinatiton with cannibis out of a chillum. In the states, where it is known as jimson/Jamestown weed, where British soliders were drugged attempting to suprress Bacon's rebellion in 1676 (American Rev shit).
Mandrake

Also known as mandragora, and satan's apple. In Hebrew the word mandrake means "love fruit".
Some mandrake contain bifurcations and this causes them to resemble human like figures. Magicians would often form the roots to resemble the human forms even more so by pinching off and twisting the root. There are quite a large amount of legends surrounding the mandrake plant, the most known being that it will shriek when removed from the ground, so horrifically that it will kill the listener. It is also said to sprout where the semen of a hanged man drips to the earth. Witches were said to have ingested the root as when they were flying to attend orgies on the sabbath they were in actually experiencing astral journeys in which their repressed sexuality came vividly to life.
The leaves of the mandrake are used for external application, having cooling effects. Also boiled with milk to help in the pain of ulcers.
The root is often explained as a hypnotic, which produces brain activity similar in REM sleep, however the root stops one from experiencing deep sleep and therefore is said to encourage lucid and waking dreams but can even go so far to an astral plane experience.
Belladonna

Also known as deadly nightshade, devil's cherries, divale, devil's herb, great morel, banewort, dwayberry. The genus name "atropa" (Atropa Belladonna) comes from Atropos one of the three Fates of Greek mythology and the name "atropa belladonna" is derived from an Italian and Greek admonition meaning "do not betray the beautiful lady".
According to legends the plant belongs to a devil who goes about tending to it and can only be distracted from its care one night a year on Walpurgis, when preparing for the witches' sabbath. The apples of Sodom are said to be related to this plant.
Belladonna's uses are that of a narcotic, diuretic, sedative, antispasmodic, mydriatic. The hallucinations that belladonna produces are notorious for being extremely unpleasant and the person rarely has a very clear memory of the event only knowing that it was pretty horrible. Often overdose is common. Belladonna is a most valuable plant in the treatment of eye diseases. Strangely Italian Renaissance women used to take small doses of belladonna to dilate their pupils for cosmetic reasons. Cleopatra is reputed for giving belladonna to her slaves to gauge its effectiveness and it was a popular method of dispatch in the Roman Empire. It was also in Ancient Rome often used to posion arrows.
It is also believed that witches used a mixture of belladonna, opium poppy and other plants such as monkshood and posion hemlock as a flying ointment. Like mandrake it is often argued that flying ointment encourged hallucinatory dreaming, especially the combination of tropane alkaloids with papaver somnigerum (morphine found in opium poppies) would produce one hell of a dream-waking state.

Tobacco is also part of the Solanaceae family so I am sure you can see why it is my favorite.

Something amazing about the Spanish language.

You are more than likely aware that there are two forms of the verb "to be", those being "estar" and "ser". One of the defining differences being "estar" is transitory and "ser" is more permanent.
For example:
"I am my mother's daughter." SER would be used.
"I am in the car." ESTAR would be used.

When referring to death (i.e. "He is dead.") you use estar. TRANSITORY.
Now if you grew up speaking this language would this small verb choice almost change your perception on what death is? I don't know, probably. Either way I thought this was worth sharing.

This is my new favorite fact about language. My old favorite was this. The Latin root of rhododendron is rhoden. The word rhoden means "rose" but was also interchangeably used for female genitalia. If you eat a rhododendron flower it is poisonous. I don't think I need to spell out what this means.

So hello zine and or comic readers and or feminists and or goth art fans! If you don't already know about Dame Darcy you really should!

Dame Darcy is quite the lady she a comic artist, fine artist, musician (though I haven't heard it John described it as overly dramatic thoughtful electropop), filmmaker and writer! And she is quite the ravishing beauty.

What I am going to be sharing most of is about her zine comic Meat Cake.
I don't know how I would describe Meat Cake but most of its characters are fantasy mythological ladies (mermaids, vampires ect)and they go around being very clever and witty and cheeky. In the end pages of her comics she usually has some DIY section on how to do various things such as making magic fairy princess dolls or how to knit and so forth.

She also makes dolls and if you send her photocopies of your hand she'll read your palm for you and send you a synopsis back in the mail.

Second we have MADGE GILL.
She was alive from 1882-1961 and she was guided by a spirit she called "Myrninerest" (My Inner Rest). She never sold or exhibited her work out of fear of angering Myrninerest. But anyways she is quite wonderful and here is some of her work.

Once there was a guy named Austin Osman Spare. He was a pretty grotesquely racy artist circa early 1900s. This artwork gets him somehow in a sort of friendship with our old friend, Aleister Crowley. However Mr. Spare was not so favorable to his magik. Anyways he did a lot of crazy stuff like the Book of Satyrs but what i want to share is from The Book of Pleasures. (which i am incapable of simply explaining the content).

In this book he has created The Alphabet of Desire.

This alphabet is bunch of sigils composed for expressing a desire.

Sigils themselves are worth looking into.

witch's hair is my personal favorite as it is prevalent all over the pacific northwest. it also keeps nicely when dry. also edible.
but be careful because not all lichens are edible
like wolf lichen

and don't pick certain beard lichens because some are going extinct

the only bummer about lichen is that they don't have common use names (there is obviously some slang for often seen ones)
